Living and Studying in the Netherlands

Studying abroad is more than following classes — it is about discovering a new culture, building connections, and feeling at home in a new environment. At Viaa in Zwolle, we offer international students a personal, supportive and community‑focused study experience in the Netherlands.

Living and Studying Among the Dutch

During your exchange programme at Viaa, you will quickly become familiar with the Dutch way of life. You may notice that meeting up often requires making an afspraak (appointment) in advance, and that Dutch people are known for their direct and honest communication. This straightforward attitude is part of everyday life and becomes especially clear when working on group projects or interacting with fellow students and host families.

Zwolle is a student‑friendly city with a historic centre, green surroundings, and a relaxed atmosphere. It offers the perfect balance between study, social life, and leisure.

Housing Options: Host Families or Independent Living

Viaa offers international students the opportunity to live with a Dutch host family in Zwolle or a nearby community. Most exchange students choose this option, as it provides a unique insight into Dutch daily life and culture. Living with a host family is often described as one of the most rewarding parts of the exchange experience and an excellent way to understand the Dutch concept of gezelligheid. Host families vary in size and composition, and we take student preferences into account as much as possible.

Students who prefer to find their own accommodation may do so independently. Viaa does not offer on‑campus housing, and due to a shortage of student rooms in Zwolle, we strongly advise starting your search early. Rooms or studios are commonly found via platforms such as Kamernet, Airbnb, and relevant Facebook groups. Monthly rental prices usually range between €250 and €500. The International Office is happy to provide guidance and advice during your search.

Buddy Program and Student Community

To help international students settle in, Viaa offers a buddy program that connects you with a Dutch Viaa student. Your buddy can support you before arrival, answer practical questions, and introduce you to student life in Zwolle. Many students enjoy exploring the city together, joining social activities, or travelling within the Netherlands during the exchange period.

Viaa is known for its small‑scale and personal approach, where students and lecturers know each other well. This creates a welcoming environment in which international students quickly feel at home.

Transport and Travelling in and beyond the Netherlands

The Netherlands is a compact country with a well‑developed public transport system. Trains, buses and metros provide fast and reliable connections between cities and all use the OV‑chipkaart as a payment method. For daily travel, cycling is the most common mode of transport. To make getting around easier, Viaa provides international students with an orange Viaa bike for commuting between home and campus and exploring the city.

Thanks to its central location in Europe, studying in the Netherlands also offers great travel opportunities. Countries such as Germany and Belgium are nearby, and cities in France and Luxembourg are easily accessible by international train.

Practical Matters

To obtain your credits, you need to complete the required assignments and assessments for your courses. Dutch universities of applied sciences use a numerical grading system, and a grade conversion overview is available when needed.

All students staying in the Netherlands are required to have appropriate healthcare insurance. Depending on your nationality and study situation, this may involve Dutch public health insurance or a private policy that covers medical care in the Netherlands. Residence permit and visa procedures, where applicable, are arranged by Viaa as the official sponsor of your stay.
