“I study at Dordt University, where exchange students from Viaa regularly come to study. I had some great conversations with two Dutch students about the differences between life there and here—such as the fact that students in the Netherlands generally do not live on campus, as they do in the United States, but instead rent rooms or live with their parents. It seemed like a unique opportunity to study in the Netherlands, and they encouraged me to go for it. I also heard inspiring stories from friends who had already taken part in exchange programs.

Growing up in the United States, I lived a fairly sheltered life. I always attended Christian schools and lived on a close-knit campus. In the Netherlands, I have had so many new experiences. It has definitely made me a richer person. People here are direct, but in a positive way—they are very open and honest.

Thanks to my host family, I truly felt part of Dutch life. They took me everywhere and we had many conversations about how things are organized and work here. The students I knew helped me make Dutch friends. When you find yourself in a place where you do not know anyone, you have to take the initiative to build relationships. As a result, I have become more independent and more confident in myself.

I have the impression that life here moves at a slightly slower pace than it does in the United States. Back home, there is always somewhere to be or something going on. Here, people seem to make more time for spending quality time together. Of course, I missed my friends and family, but above all, I am grateful for this experience.”
